Your Website – A Place To Call Home. We’re about to explore lots of ways to engage and communicate with your customer base but before that, I have an important question. Once you have their attention, what are you going to do with it?

Depending on what stage you are at, you might be working with a third-party offering that you want people to go to directly. You could also be relying on a social media account to host your brand. At some point however, your own website will become essential. It’s where you can really showcase what you have to offer.

Have you done your research?

Get inspiration from the great wide web of ideas. Look at other marketing sites but don’t limit yourself to this alone. Ultimately you are putting yourself out there when you connect with customers, so your website has to reflect a little of what you like. If you see a site that appeals to you, ask yourself what it is you like about it and use this as a base for designing your site.

How much do you want to do yourself?

There are plenty of options when it comes to building a website.

You can engage a professional if you want high-spec details, customisation and fancy functionality. This is going to cost you and you might not be able to adjust your website yourself, so you need to take this into account.

Next up are platforms like WordPress. You can customise and add modular plugins to your site to craft your user experience. There’s a bit of a learning curve involved, and you won’t have much in the way of technical support, but you’ll be in control. Many WordPress templates are completely free.

If you want to keep things uber-simple, you could use a website building platform like Wix, Squarespace or Moonfruit – to name just a few. They are good for simple websites and getting you up and running fast. You will usually need to pay a monthly or yearly subscription and there may be some limitations to functionality and customisation.

What is your client journey?

Whenever you interact with a new customer, you want to redirect them back to your website so that they can engage with all your content and start to invest in a business relationship with you. Once they are there, what do you want them to do?

Lead them from page to page thinking about building the picture you want them to see. Have a call to action or contact link on every page so that the moment they decide they want to go further, they can. Also, find a way to collect contact details so you can continue to communicate. This might be a simple sign up box or you might want to offer them a free gift in exchange for their email address.
